I am new to sickle mowers and have been wanting one to mow around the pond and some various other areas. I picked up this Ford 501 at an auction for $300. I didn't get a chance to look it over before bidding, but it seems in decent shape for the price. I greased everything up and it works fine, but I have a few questions.

1. It has what appears to be some kind of stabilizers that should attach to the 3 point hitch arms. The left one doesn't fit my tractor very well and the right one doesn't fit at all. Are these needed?

2. The cutting teeth are obviously dull and I am debating whether to sharpen or replace. Does anyone have suggestions on where to purchase new teeth and how much I should expect to spend?

3. Is there anything else that I'm forgetting?

Ok folks in my quest to find a good used sickle mower I have run across numerous brands. I then started looking at parts availability in my area. For the NH 451 it’s a piece of cake. I found the same for the John Deere as wall as Case IH. Frontier is also available through JD. However the off brands and Italian ones are throwing me.

Here is an example of what I found for replacement cutter blades at TSC

Blade marked A- fits Allis Chalmers, John Deere, Ford, Triumph

Blade marked B fits Case, Field Queen Hay, Owatonna & Prairie Star

Blade marked B- fits Case-IH, Massey Ferguson, New Holland, Gehl, Ford

Ken at Sweet Farm Equipment was kind enough to share the following with me. The IH 1300 is the same as the Ford 505 and the New Idea 522 and the Case/IH and 90% same as the IH 100.

So as to the Italian brands – are they all made by the same company. Are some rebranded for US sales as the Enorossi Farmking brand.

Here is a list of brands I found locally and the internet for sale. Are some made by the same folks, and which do folks know you can’t or would have a rough time getting parts for.

Frontier is made for JD, John Deere, Dearborn/Ford, Ford, Aktiv, Agco/New Idea, Case/IH, New Holland Massey Ferguson, Farmking – by Enorossi, PGF, Rossi, Kuhn, Gaspardo, Superior, Befco, Feraboli. Sitrex. Allis Chalmers. Garabali. Rowse – I think they use NH and IH parts. DCM Italia – Hidaro branded.

Sorry for asking the tough questions, but I am trying to think ahead. It may be worth it to pay a few more $$ for a brand I can get parts for, that a cheap offer that costs me in the end.

I am currently looking at a Ford 501, a NH 451 and an IH1300 locally. There my be a JD350 also available as well as a belt driven MF - unknown model.

Whatever brand you decide to go with make sure that the company has not discontinued parts. You can get the sickle sections and guards from the aftermarket. Some of the older models you might not be able to get parts for the cutterhead and such. I think that the New Holland 451 is still in production so any part for it would be available.

The Ford 501 is a very good mower, however if you want to trim along roadbanks or ditches a pitman style mower is not the type to choose. The other problem you may have is attaching it to your tractor.

I looked at another NH 451 yesterday and discovered a big issue. It was actually hooked up to the guys tractor. He was not selling, just cutting a neighbors field. The upper inverted U hoop will not clear my tractors lift arms as it attaches directly to the back of the tractor. My lift arms are spaced too close together. So I will need to get the adapter folks mention. I remember reading about this, but did not fully understand how the unit actually hooked up. Is the adapter easy to use?

Are there other models or brands I will have the same issue with, or better yet what will fit my compact tractor? It appears the NH 451 is the only one where the U tube actually attaches to the back of the tractor, rather than just the upper top link away from the lift arms. Is this correct?

I went thru the same senerio as you, 'cause I'm alway getting stuck with a machine that the parts people just say "I ain't never seen one of those before". I'm mowin' Hay, so, I finally went with a new Drum Mower. Okay, I know, It's made in Turkey. But, the dealer "SAYS" parts won't be a problem. I didn't like the old keeps pluggin' up sicke bar machines because even setting in the scrape iron piles the dealers were tyin' to get $300-$400. I gave a little less that three thousand for the new machine but I can hook up a and go and blow. Once in while you have to get a little brave and get a piece of newer technology, at least new to the good 'ol USA. bjr

While I agree a new tool woud be great, Im retired with a Kid still in colledge. Trying to get by on what I can afford, which is a used sickle mower and power rake. Next year, or maybe too, I may spring for a good used bailer. Son will be out by then, and I can afford more - unless I need to buy the Boss Unit a new car. . so maybe 4 years out the bailer. no waite. Ill need a new truck then

I did contact Web Sickle Sirvice. They suggested I find a used CIH1300. They have lots of parts and it will fit my tractor without using an adapter.

Ford 501 Sickle Mower

My sickle mower cracked along the frame yesterday where the trip mechanism is close to the shoe. I had a guy weld a patch, but when I went to cut again today, it kept tripping. It also was allowing a fair chunk of the grass to slide under the sickle, so the field I was working on is not pretty at all.

I had to take the thing apart so I could manhandle the frame into my truckbed to take it to the welder, so perhaps I threw something out of alignment. However, I think the weld was not at the exact same angle (it's close, I can't tell by the naked eye) and I'm in real trouble.

I tried tightening the trip spring to stop the tripping but that didn't work. I tried to change the angle of the cutter bar downward but the grass still goes underneath.

What else should I adjust?

I had 2 do that, welded one myself but didn't trust it, came apon the 2nd mower soon after, when it cracked I took it to a pro welder & he linged it up right as I had the bar along with.

I suspect something got warped or off kilter so the latch doesn't hold - it needs to be set up square. Defeating the latch and screwing it down tight or bolted or welded together will lead to a busted frame again real quick.

As to the mowing problem, I suspect one or both of 2 issues:

The mower bar is supposed to actually angle a couple degrees forward at the tip, I bet the welder didn't get the crack closed all the way up and your bar now is angled back a tiny bit instead of forward.

Second, if the crack didn't get closed all the way, or the frame is longer now, your sickle registration is off. As the sickle goes back & forth, it needs to stop with the sickles exactly in the middle of the guards, not a hair before or after centered. If your framework is longer now or angled - even a little - it will affect this. The shims between your frame and the bar head, held on with the 3 big bolts that allow bar twisting are what adjust this registering - add or remove shims.

All in all - yup you got problems. Something in the welding got your frame twisted/ wrong angle and that's going to be difficult to fix as it's causing 2 problems, maybe 3. I think you will be ahead keeping this one for parts and looking for a different one with a good frame. This one - you'll have to cut the weld, get it lined up perfect, and reweld - then that doesn't maybe address what the latch problem is.

How to Attach a Ford 501 Sickle Mower, ford 501 sickle mower parts

The Ford 501 Sickle Mower is piece of farm equipment used mainly for cutting grass and similar vegetation. It consists of a six- to eight-foot bar mounted on the right rear of a tractor and cuts with a shearing action. The 501 was designed as an accessory to Ford tractors equipped with a hydraulic system, but it will work with any tractor with a three-point lift linkage that mimics the Ford design. The cutter bar can easily be raised using the tractor's hydraulic control lever to prevent damage to the mower when passing over rocks or tree stumps. Attaching the mower takes several steps and should be followed carefully, as safety issues are involved with improper attachment.

Things You'll Need

Put on your work gloves. Check the frame size for your mower. It will either be a 56-inch frame mower or a 76-inch frame mower. When you have determined the frame size, adjust the tractor's rear wheels to the mower's frame size. For 56-inch frames, adjust the rear tractor wheels to 56-inch centers or less. The same rule applies for 76-inch frames.

Back the tractor into a position where you can align its left lower link to the mower's lift link pin. Attach these two parts together and secure the connection with the tractor linchpin.

Roll the tractor and adjust the leveling crank until the tractor's right lower link can be attached to the right link pin on the mower. Use the tractor linch pin to secure the connection.

Attach the upper link from the mower to the lower hole in the tractor rocker arm by using the link pin.

Start the tractor. Using the hydraulic control lever, lift the mower frame assembly slightly and move the mower to the left to allow attachment of the left stabilizer. Place the stabilizer guide under the tractor's left lift link. Position the clamp over the link and tighten the nut firmly.

Depending on the tractor type, install the clamp plate or push rod anchor assembly onto the left lower link. Install the push rod on either the clamp plate or anchor assembly.

Shift the mower assembly to the right to attach the right stabilizer. Place the stabilizer guide under the tractor's right lift link. Position the clamp over the link and tighten the nut firmly.

Once you know your model number and serial number you can use either the Illustrated Parts Look-up Tool or the Owners Manual Download to easily search for the correct part numbers needed. Cub Cadet's current (1997 and later) model and serial numbers are generally 11 characters in length. A character could be a number, dash or a letter. If '0' represented all numbers and/or dashes and 'X' represented all letters, the model and serial numbers should appear as follows: Model number example: 00XX000X000 Where do I find the model and serial number tag on my equipment, and what does it look like? Identification tags are located in areas unlikely to need replacement, even after years of use. For most of our power equipment, these tags are approximately 2" x 3" in size. They also have the Cub Cadet Product's name, address and customer service phone number listed across the bottom. Riding mower tags are located on the underside of the seat. For walk-behind mowers this tag is found either on the deck or on the rear door of rear discharge units.
