This was an LX but with the 5.0 package with T-tops. The faster I drove this car the quieter it got. At 55 to 60 mph it was kinda noisy. The car itself handled great! I could turn on a dime and it held long turns without throwing you our the window. The biggest problem with the car was the carborator. It was a Holly four barrell that mechanics tend.

1985 MUSTANG GT 5-SP MANUAL TRANS. UNMOLESTEED CAR
1985 was the last year with a carb most hp before 86 when they added EFI- not too many of these cars left that aren't modified or beat up.
92,000 miles. No winters ever, no rust. 2nd Owner. The car is all stock with the exception of the exhaust. It has a MAC exhaust (like flow master) with the X-pipe no converters,
A set of stainless shorty headers. I do still have the stock headers and converters.
The car was a low option car; it has roll up windows, No AC, and was ordered with the radio delete package. I do have a 2-year-old JVC radio in the car. I still have the window sticker for the car.
I bought this car from the original owner who is my good friends older brother so I knew how it was treated. I have had the car since 1996 and have just used it for pleasure. My brother also worked at dealership at the time.
The body on the car is in great shape. There are no door dings or dents, or scratches on the car. The bumper covers are in good shape with no scratches. I removed the black hood stripe when I got the car I have a new one in the box not installed but hood would need to be sanded and primed where sticker goes as its scratched from removing the old sticker and I think it would show threw the sticker. There is no rust on the car at all it was never driven in the winter.
The paint on the car is original and still shines if you keep it waxed as its not clear coat paint you need to keep it waxed if you leave it in the sun. As stated above the hood is missing sticker and the top of the roof has a repair from when the car was new where the roof seams are that has a very slight slight mismatch where they blended the paint.
The interior is in nice shape; there are no major stains on the seats or carpets. The dash pad has a faded spot but no cracks it could be removed and repainted. The two plastic panels in rear of the car also have a fade spot on each side that could be painted also.
The car passed New York state inspection last summer, it has a new battery, water pump, 2 new tires, does not burn oil, has good brakes you can drive it about anyware
The car is not a showpiece its not perfect but still looks very nice, it's a 25 year old car and I do drive it about 2500 miles a year, but it's a nice unmolested car that could be back to new condition with very little work or just enjoy it the way it is.

Hemmings Find of the Day – 1985 Ford Mustang GT, 1985 mustang gt for sale
While this five-speed-equipped 1985 Ford Mustang GT for sale on Hemmings.com isn't entirely original (repainted hood, some exhaust work), it's probably as original as any four-eyed Fox-body Mustang can be, showing less than 13,000 miles and still rolling on its original tires. It's also remarkably clean, particularly for a Massachusetts car, as the photos of the bottom door lips and interior show. From the seller's description:
Canyon Red exterior with Gray Recaro Cloth bucket seat interior. Last year for the carb'd cars and one of the best years (in my opinion) of the four eyed Fox body Mustangs.
This is a one owner car that I stumbled across one day about 3 months ago, I knew as soon as I saw it that it was a legit low mile car. This car was stored in your typical New England style barn for about 10 years (friendly divorce situation). It has always been “exercised,” driven around the block from time to time, that sort of thing. The fluids are fresh as are the filters. The rust under the car is the typical “flash” rust that would be found on any untreated parts. Ford did not coat the engines, control arms, or the rear end housings at that time. Other than that, this car is 100 percent rust free!
I found past evidence of mice in the heater box, so I had the heater/AC unit completely re-done and it now works great! While I was there, I replaced the heater core (a typical Fox body weak spot). There are no bad smells in the car at all – the mice weren't there for very long.
The exhaust has been modified somewhat, but the front pipe and the tail pipes are original equipment to the car. The catalytic converter and the mufflers were replaced with newer pieces (@$#!&^!!).
The original owner apparently hated the GT decal that was on the hood, so he had the dealer remove it and he resprayed the hood and the cowl vent Canyon Red like the rest of the car – it kind'a cleans things up visually – but it's not original. As far as I can tell, that all that was ever repainted, and the rest is original paint.
The body has no dings and no obvious scratches, I cut'n buffed the car a few weeks back and she looks real nice now. The original Marchal Fog lights work great, covers were gone (of course), but I found a set of Cibie covers to go over them. The lights are all original. All the charcoal trim and glass is in perfect shape, and the windows (manual) roll up and down very smoothly – like new!
The interior of the car was perfect, with the exception of the typical saggy headliner; the guys at American Muscle helped me out with a new ABS backed piece, and it looks great now. Map light works perfect, the car was never smoked in, and the stereo works perfectly. The car I'm sure still has the build sheet in the side panels back in the cargo area – I never checked.
I have the original owner's manual and the original owner's title. Car has a clean carfax.
The only thing I would do to this car is swap out the tires for a fresh set and bring the exhaust back to stock – but the current setup is solid and sounds real good.

Georgia state patrol used them also. And they were fast. Had one run me down while I was running in triple digits. As the road (Interstate) was not heavily populated at the time, he cut me a MAJOR break (30 over can result in a trip to jail), “too fast for conditions”. I later thought that maybe the break he gave me was because it gave him an excuse to “clean out the carbon”.

Reminded me of Oklahoma Highway Patrol's brief experiment with the 5.0's in the mid 90's. It seems they quit using them because of weak transmissions

Hi Dave, just want to say that is a sweet car.(are you sure you want to sell it?) It is very hard to find examples like this, as most were driven hard or drag raced. Actually, I'd prefer the carb. model, as I had some minor hiccups with my F.I. model. of which I knew nothing about. If I wasn't saving for a TR-6, I'd go for it. Good luck!( love that engine sound in the video, if I remember, they made quite a holler)

I bought a 86 gt on new years day in 86. It was was white with black GT trim with red interior with t-tops. I loved this car and had a tremendous amount of fun with it. I installed underdrive pulleys and removed the cat convertors and installed an open air box for better breathing. IROC's could not touch it or most anything else in the day. In 89 I had just installed new gatorbacks and some minor engine mods and I had just exited from my fathers shop and got on it in front of my dads employees and out of no where a Volkswagon did a u-turn and as I swerved to the left at full throttle my right rear tire ran up on his left front fender and I flipped up and landed on the roof first then rolled side over side. I was not wearing a seatbelt and was somehow thrown in the passenger floorboard and my only injury was a sliight cut on my arm but was plenty sore for a week. The car was destroyed though but after cutting off the roof and replacing the rear end that was ripped out it lived out its life as a farm car.

What a great car and priced right as far as I'm concerned! It would be hard to find a better/fun car for that money. There are very few '85 models of anything that I would prefer. One of our neighbors has one, rough, needs about everything, runs good, has over 300,000 miles on it! Engine never completely rebuilt. Just a couple of clutches/ brakes/ and general upkeep is all. Amazing….

I almost bought a car almost like this for my second car in 1996. Same color, but an automatic & was pretty beat. I got a '89 Lebaron GTC Turbo Coupe instead, which eat up a bit of money, but that's another story.

I still find these Mustangs attractive. Good clean simple shape.
And I find the headlights give it a more aggressive look that was lost when they went to aero plastic headlights. And these glass headlights will never haze and cloud.

When my wife and I were still dating I rented a convertible about '86 or '87. Took it to San Diego. I got out to use the rest room at a rest stop and came back to find her in the car surrounded by a bus load of Japanese tourists with cameras taking pictures. In the course of its rather assertive advertising, BMW shows us the tail end of a 533i and promises "a decompression chamber for the highly motivated."
Maybe. But wouldn't you rather have a V-8, particularly if that V-8 has the refinement we've always associated with the Germans' fours and sixes, and the go power the Germans can only dream of in their exports to America?
It's easy to get the wrong idea about the Mustang GT. You can thumb back to this road test's spec page, glom onto the 6.4-second 0-to-60 time, and conclude we've finally found the pavement burner of our adolescent fantasies.
Wrong. This is a car for adults. It's okay if you're highly motivated. It's okay if you can afford a whole lot more than the test car's $9885 base price. It's even okay if you're currently driving a German decompression chamber. In fact, it's probably better if you are, because then you'll be in a position to appreciate how close this Mustang GT comes to the German definition of a serious car.
A serious car starts with a look, and Ford, maybe because it has more international blood pumping through its engineering veins than any other Detroit automaker, seems to understand the difference between what is German and what is Atari. If you're not careful with the options sheet, the inside of your Camaro or Firebird will look like Tokyo by night, but the Mustang GT has real gauges with black faces and white markings. The outside is restrained as well. Apart from the blackout hood treatment, "GT" is the only proclamation you'll find anywhere, unless you count the 60-series gatorback Goodyears that fill the fender openings. And even they say "German": they're moderate in their profile, which is the German way. Detroit, in contrast, tends to get carried away and lower the profile down to rim-protector height, never mind what it does to the handling.
The black-rubber protective strip that runs around the perimeter of the car looks rather German, too. And rather sensible, we think, given the way parking lots eat up good cars these days.
There's yet another aspect of the Mustang GT that suggests German, and that's the seating position. Detroiters are low—you have to sit on the floor—and they have solar-cooker windshields that bake your lap and tumblehome side glass that drops rain on your ear when you crack open the window. But not in the Mustang. The extra 2.4 inches of height (compared with the IROC Camaro's) allows you to sit up. The headroom soars overhead like a cathedral—or a BMW.
Of course, none of these German suggestions would matter—we probably wouldn't even have noticed them—if the Mustang GT didn't have a German way of getting down the road. And here again Ford has done the un-American thing. Lusty Detroiters roar and rumble: their air cleaners honk, and their exhausts say 1967. But the GT is refined. The air intake is muted, and the pipes issue only a minor-key blurble, just enough to leave no doubt that there are eight cylinders hooked to the other end. The engine is a delight, eager as any German and remarkably responsive. Lug it down to 1200 rpm in fifth, and it just goes when you push the pedal. Lug it down to 800, and it falters for a fraction of a second (not to be confused with a stumble) before it goes. Just a little reminder that this is a real American V-8 under the hood, one that hasn't succumbed to total homogenization yet, one with a Holley carburetor. The engine is fully up to date—all the electronics an ignition could ever ask for, roller lifters to eliminate friction, and, later in the year, a two-speed accessory drive to cut another 5 hp in parasitic losses—but all the driver notices is that it seems to produce a bountiful harvest of horsepower with no ruckus. You have to be of a certain maturity to appreciate this.
So you're sitting head high, all German-like in the front bucket of this Mustang, the engine whirring easily instead of grumbling, having a pretty nice time motoring down the blacktop, when you notice that the white-on-black speedometer says 80 mph. The road is neglected-infrastructure rough, and you're not even gripping the wheel. In fact, you hadn't really noticed the speed, just that everything was copacetic and fun. And this, finally, blurs the last differences between Dearborn and Deutschland. This car has dynamik. Call it road sense. Call it German aplomb. Call it good. For sure, Mustangs have never possessed it before, and neither did the spoilered-and-skirted offerings from across town. No one advancement can be cited, just as size isn't the only difference between a kid and a grown-up.

In 1985, Ford mixed a face-lifted nose with the hottest 5.0 yet, and made it so affordable that it was the biggest performance bargain in more than two decades. Covered in a gorgeous shade of Burgundy, this GT has an incredible intimidating look, but has the power under the hood to back it up. Gone is the original hood, but it has been replaced with a 3" cowl induction piece that adds to the overall appeal of the car. The black belt line that circle the body are in excellent condition, and all the correct GT emblems are present on the quarters. At the back you'll find a spoiler and chrome-tipped dual exhaust to tie the car into a nice little bow. Overall the exterior is in great shape and is ready for the street or strip.
Inside you'll find the rare and sought after cloth interior option that makes this a great place to log miles from. The ultra-supportive buckets feature grippy fabric inserts that flank a middle console. There's no notable wear, even on the side bolsters, and what appear to be the original carpeting doesn't tell you much about the cars age either. In front of the driver, you'll find a wood grained three-spoke steering wheel that features the historic Mustang logo. The dash gauges are fully functional, and on the A-pillar you'll notice the addition of auxiliary gauges to keep even more tabs on the Ford engine. In front of the shifter you'll find the upgraded AM/FM/CD Player to belt out your favorite tunes. With power steering and power brakes, this is a car that you won't want to get out of. The rear hatch area is covered in the same carpet and features plenty of room for all of your awards from the local car show.
Prop the hood up, and you'll reveal an extremely detailed engine bay that houses a 331 stroker motor. Dressed for show, and ready to go, the engine features an Holley aluminum heads, Lunati cam, Weiand intake, a Holley 650 carb, and an aluminum radiator. Covered in chrome pretty much everywhere you look, this is one of the nicest fox-body engine bays we have ever seen. There's no hints of age anywhere, and a yellow-top Optima battery provides reliable startups. Bolted to the engine is a 3-speed automatic equipped with a 2400 stall converter. Power is supplied to the ground thanks to 17" Saleen rims that have been wrapped in Nexen rubber.

1985 Ford Mustang Twister II - A Look Back, 1985 mustang gt for sale
In that same spirit, R&A Motor-sports in Lee's Summit, Missouri, recently began converting a series of GT coupes and convertibles into Twister Specials. It has its followers, but the Twister regional edition is perhaps the least-known of the Mustang specials, even though there have been two versions of the tornadic Ponies.
At the request of the Kansas City District Sales Office, Ford geared up for a special batch of 100 '70 Mach 1s and 100 Torinos to be displayed on November 7, 1969, when Ford's Total Performance Day traveling exhibit visited the area. The original request was that each of the Twister Special Mustangs would be outfitted with the Super Cobra Jet 428 engine and the Torinos would carry the SCJ 429. Due to some supply problems, those numbers fell short by a few units and engine choices were compromised, but each Mustang SportsRoof wore Grabber Orange with special tornado-inspired decals. Of the 96 Mustangs produced, exactly half were delivered with Ford's 351 four-barrel engine. C6 automatic transmissions found their way into 24 of the 428-equipped cars and into 39 of the 351 Mustangs. Manual four-speeds accounted for 24 428 cars and 9 351s. Other than transmission choices, the Twister Mustangs were identical, Dearborn-built cars with sequential VINs that began with "118."
Fifteen years later, the Mustang was recovering from the stigma of low-performance years that had begun, coincidentally, shortly after the '70 model. Ford was about to make good on its promise to deliver more than 200 hp from its 5.0L V-8 in 1985, the first time a Mustang would reach that milestone since '73's Q-code 351 with a four-barrel carb. Getting an advertised 210 horses was the result of old-fashioned hot-rod tricks and new technology: low friction roller tappets, a high-performance camshaft, stainless steel headers that replaced high-flow cast-iron manifolds, and twin exhaust pipes purging the hot exhaust gases through individual catalytic converters. Lost horsepower was reclaimed through a new accessory drive system that reduced the air-conditioner compressor, power steering pump, and alternator to half-speed.
When mated to the four-speed automatic overdrive transmission, the 5.0L lost its carburetor-along with 45 hp-and claimed an output of 165 horses. GT upgrades included a T5 transmission with shorter gear throws, a quad-shock system in the rear, a larger rear stabilizer bar, and Goodyear Eagle P225/60VR 15 "Gatorback" unidirectional tires mounted on new alloy wheels.
The 3.8L V-6 with electronic fuel injection soldiered on with 120 hp in 1985; the 2.3L four-cylinder with a single-barrel carburetor was rated at 88. For comparison, realize that today's smallest Mustang powerplant, the 4.0L V-6, produces 210 hp. That's the same output as '85's GT V-8.
Ford dropped the base L series, creating an entry-level package out of the LX with standard power brakes and steering, a remote-control right-side mirror, a dual note horn, interval windshield wipers, and an AM/FM stereo radio. As before, notchback and hatchback bodies were offered. New standard interior features included a console, low-back bucket seats (on LX), Lear-Siegler articulated sport seats (on GT), luxury door trim panels, and covered visor mirrors. The convertible's quarter-trim panels were revised to accommodate a refined seatbelt system. Mechanical radio faces switched to a contemporary flat design. All Mustangs had larger tires that year, with added urethane lower-body side protection. A new electronic AM/FM stereo radio with cassette player was added to the options list. The 3.8L V-6 and 5.0L V-8 had a new oil warning light.
The Mustang received a new front cap design with an air dam below the bumper. The grille was similar to what the turbocharged SVO wore-one wide slot with angled sides in a sloping front panel with a Ford oval emblem affixed just below the hood line. On GTs, the air dam held integral foglamps. Full-width taillamps broke only for the license plate opening, with backup lenses sitting high in each inner section and a Ford oval posted on the right side of the trunk lid. Exterior trim and accents changed from earlier models' charcoal to black, except for the horizontal rub strip. The GT received a unique tape treatment on the hood.
Such an exciting product inspired memories of the marque's many special editions. Someone in Ford's Kansas City sales district noticed that 1985 marked the 15th anniversary of the Twister Special. Collaborating with Ford again, dealers arranged to purchase 90 GTs in hatchback and convertible form and apply certain commemorative decals as part of a "Twister II" promotion.
Because it was a cosmetic package that required no active factory involvement, dealers were free to order the cars with any combination of colors, powerplants, and options normally available on the GT. The Twister II featured on these pages, for example, is wearing stock GT 10-spoke wheels wrapped with Goodyear Gatorback rubber; the hatch louvers and T-top roof were both extra-cost options.
According to research undertaken by David and Kathy Bowers at MustangGT.org, Twister II GTs were assembled in October 1984 with vehicle identification numbers falling somewhere between 109800-109899, 110300-110399, and 112200-112299. The majority were painted Jalapeo Red (code 2R), but Oxford White (9L), Medium Canyon Red Metallic (2A), and possibly Silver Metallic (1E) were also offered.
Along with the rocker panel "TWISTER II" striping and "tornado with eyes" funnel cloud insignia, the package included a bronze dashplate, an alabaster coaster with a running horse logo, and "1985 Limited Edition TWISTER II, Kansas City District, October 1984" lettering, and a press kit from Ford discussing the promotion. Unfortunately, not all Twister IIs received dashplates, coasters, and press kits, as some were taken by sales staff members with sticky fingers.
All Twister IIs have a DSO of 53 (Kansas City) on their certification label and buildsheet, but the Ford window sticker doesn't mention anything about the package. According to research, 74 Twister IIs were five-speed hatchbacks, 2 were automatic-equipped hatchbacks, 9 were five-speed convertibles, and 5 were automatic convertibles. A dozen or so Twister IIs were ordered with the optional 3.08:1 rear-axle gears, but no convertibles were so equipped.
The revived special edition made its debut alongside several '70 models during a luncheon at the Marriott Hotel in Overland Park, Kansas, in November 1984. Enthusiasm for the Mustang's improved performance image was reflected in year-end sales, which saw 156,514 units go to new homes-31.7 percent of which were equipped with 5.0L V-8 engines.
The third Twister package, to be released as an '08, will combine elements of the first two. Similar to the '70, all new Twisters will come in one color only: Grabber Orange. Following the flexibility of the '85 model, the '08 Twisters can be ordered as coupes or convertibles. Ford VINs will vary throughout production, but R&A Motorsports will assign its own serialized plaques for the run.
Twister: Then And Now
First, there were the '70 Twister Specials. They were all Grabber Orange with unique striping and tornado decals, such as Carl Todd's example in the photo from the Mid-America Performance Ford and Shelby Meet. Now there are the '08 Twister Specials, spearheaded by Jeff Yergovich at R&A Motorsports. R&A's modern Twisters resemble the originals with Grabber Orange paint, a Shaker scoop, Mach 1 hood striping on a '70-style hood, and Twister Special "tornado" decals. Also like the originals, only 96 will be produced-48 hardtops and 48 convertibles-for Ford dealers in the Kansas City sales district. Jeff says there will also be six special Twisters-two prototypes, two drag cars, and two road race cars.
Other Twister Special equipment includes Eibach springs for a lower stance, a Classic Design Concepts Glassback roof for hardtops and lightbar for convertibles, 3.91 Traction-Lok gears, custom wheels, sequential taillights, performance exhaust, and upgraded brakes. Each car gets its own serial number and will be listed in Terry Fritts' Twister Special Registry (www.twisterspecialregistry.com). Jeff is arranging to have the cars delivered to Kansas City International Raceway, just as the original Twister Mustangs and Torinos.
