We took our 500-4X4 Scrambler to the Portage "Canal Days" Drag races on May 31, 2003. These are 300-foot dirt drags run by the "Monkey Butt" club using their Pro Tree Electronic Timing System. The machine had the Stage 5 engine kit and Roller Action Kit in the secondary clutch. The machine was ridden by our dyno man Jimmy "The Greek" Anagnoustopolous and took 3 First class wins, including the 500 and 700 four wheel drive classes against two stroke and 700 Polaris Sportsman. The machine never lost a start all day, even running in 2-wheel drive against DS 650 Bombardiers, Yamaha Raptors and the new 700 Kawasaki. We credit this to the Stage 5 kit and the quick response of the 42mm Flatslide carb. The Stage 5 kit can easily be used for racing as well as trail riding, mud bogging and pulling.

POLARIS 500 SCRAMBLER POWER DEVELOPMENTS,
FROM THE DYNO TO THE RACE TRACKS.

We have had a lot of request for Dyno information on the Scrambler 500 Stage kits. The different Stages have been in development from 1997 to the present day. We did not want to mix Dyno information from 5 years back with recent developments, so this spring we decided to run every stage from Stock through Stage 5 back to back. This gives you a professional engineering evaluation of the power gains of each stage. 4X4 machines require good torque at lower RPM and all the mods deliver more torque in low and midrange than the stock machine. Each Stage improves cylinder efficiency rather than gain power from high RPM. This in turn increases torque and keeps the RPM close to stock levels to maintain reliability and prevent crank problems. Even Stage 5 pulls Max power at 6800 RPM only 200 RPM up from stock.

Max HP: 37.5 @ 6600 RPM, MAX Torque: 32.9 Ft/Lbs @ 5400 RPM

Polaris claimed that the new 500 Scrambler would have as much power as their two stroke 400. We found this to be true, the stock model dynoed out with 37.5 HP @ 6600 RPM and 32.9 Ft/Lbs @ 5400 RPM.

Our Rebuildable Black Muffler has been in development since 1996 and has proven ideal for 4 Stroke ATV's that need good bottom end and midrange performance. The Megaphone section creates a strong vacuum signal across the power band, resulting in more HP, torque and quicker throttle response. Max power with the Muffler increases to 40 HP @ 6600 RPM and Max torque increased to 33.7 Ft/Lbs @ 4800 RPM, 600 RPM lower than the stocker. This mod represents a 7% power gain over stock.

The 42 TMX Carb has many advantages. Airflow is up 20% compared to the stock carb and throttle response is instant instead of having to wait for vacuum to build up as on the stock CV carb. The TMX carb is not sensitive to Air box vacuum like the stock carb and the box can be differently modified or the carb can be run with a straight Racing Filter for better power. Test was run with stock air box. Max Power increased to 42 HP @ 6600 RPM and Max torque increased to 35 Ft/Lbs @ 5400 RPM. The Stage 2 Mods represent a 12% increase over Stock.

We tried several cams during development. Some produced more power, but at higher RPM's and with a loss of bottom end torque. This cam has 10 degrees more duration with stock lift and improves both midrange torque and top end power with only a 200 RPM increase. The Stage 3 combination produces Max HP of 44 HP @ 6800 RPM and a Max torque of 36.4 Ft/Lbs @ 5800 RPM. This represents a 17% increase over stock.

Stock compression ratio is 10.2:1. Our piston increases the compression ratio to 11:1, which still permits you to use premium 92 Octane pump gas. The improvement is stronger bottom end and midrange torque. The Stage 4 Mods give you 45 HP @ 6600 RPM and 37.3 Ft/Lbs @ 5600 RPM. In comparison, a stock Polaris 700 Sportsman puts out 45 HP @ 6000 RPM. The 500 Scrambler is of course much lighter and has no trouble out performing the 700 with the Stage 4 kit mounted. This represents a 20% increase over stock.

I picked up a nonrunning 98/99 SP500 HO for $175 mainly for parts because the previous owner did not know what the problem was, turns out it needs a cam and a carb,I got it running but it will not rev up past mid throttle.The carburetor is body is cracked near the diaphram housing and the cam has a bad exhaust lobe"checked"but the engine is sound as well as the drive portion.I do not want to put alot of $$$ in new parts,I know the 400 cam will interchange as well as the scrambler according to the polaris parts site but will the carbs dispite the jets? I asked the dealer about a 2002 SP 500 cam and he said it would work but the Polaris site shows a different part #,is there a difference? I shop Ebay alot and plan to go used,just need to know what will work.I have a 02 SP500 I ride all the time so this is just a no rush budjet fix

In 2001 polaris went to the 500 HO, they put a different cam and a 40mm carb on them, it really helps in the power dept, If you want to stay with the stock carb I have a good one I'll sell for 100 bucks.

The Polaris 500 engines are known for the exhaust lobe on the camshaft to wear drastically - The original design did not allow for enough oil flow on startup. "Solution" was. make a camshaft with a larger diameter oil passage. This is part of the reason for Polaris specifying 0W40 engine oil. Thinner "cold" oil pumps faster. Even with the larger diameter oil passage, the camshafts (even on the HO's which came later) will still wear over time, especially for the people that want to save a buck and use a heavier oil like the 5W40 and 10W40.

Reason for the "story" - when the exhaust lobe wears past a certain point, the exhaust valves do not open all the way, so the piston cannot expel all of the exhaust, which means that the intake stroke cannot "suck" as much air and fuel because there is still "volume" in the cylinder - therefore causing the higher RPM levels to cut out.

Pull your valve cover off and take a look at your rocker arms - pull the recoil starter rope and watch the rockers move up and down - you will notice the lack of "stroke" on the exhaust rocker compared to the intake rocker if your cam is going south. With the removal of 4 more bolts, you can take the rocker assembly off and "see" the condition of the lobes, and any wear that will be on the exhaust rocker.

The camshaft is replaceable without removing the cylinder head.

Good discussion on the cams on the 500. Tell me if this is the same engine as the 500 ranger 2005 carabureted. Dad is having a problem with the no compression but the valve clearance was tight. he backed them off and now gets 30 # but of course it still wont go and blows back through the intake. can it be out of time? How is the timing set. The timing chain seems tight he tells me. I cant get there till friday but he is chomping at the bit to get in the field and needs it for running back and forth. At 81 you can't walk to the tractor all the time. Any ideas would be helpful.

All the Sportsman/Scrambler 500 Fuji motors are the same. They changed the Cam and carb and added a throttle body (efi) but the engine core itself is the same as it always was.

I asked the dealer about a 2002 SP 500 cam and he said it would work but the Polaris site shows a different part #,is there a difference?

The 02 has the H.O's high duration cam that was first used in the Sramblers in 98 and later in the 500 Sportsmans in 01.

the 500 ranger is not a 500 HO motor it has a bst 34mm carburetor and the original 500 cam. if you have cam problems, you might as well put the bigger cam and carb on there, you will notice the difference right away

You can drop an HO camshaft into a regular 500 - my sister has a '98 Sportsman that dad did this to. There is noticeable power increase, but I think he had to make a jetting change in the carb as it was running richer and fouling plugs - I can't really remember, he did this to her quad about 4 years ago.

Upgrading to the cam AND larger carb is a little more involved than just replacing cam, carb and adapter - the 500 exhaust pipe is a smaller diameter than the HO ( if I remember right 1 1/4" vs 1 1/2"), so you actually start choking the cam & carb upgrade if the exhaust is not changed as well.

Polaris Industries Inc. (PII ) today provided an update to its full-year guidance. The Company now expects full-year 2016 earnings to be in the range of $3.30 to $3.80 per diluted share, $2.50 to $2.70 per diluted share lower than previously expected of which approximately two-thirds is expected to be incurred in the third quarter. Polaris also expects total Company sales for the full-year 2016 to be down in the mid to high-single digit percent range compared to previously issued guidance of flat to down two percent.

Since Polaris last updated its full year guidance and hosted its investor day in July, the Company has experienced additional RZR thermal-related issues and was unable to sufficiently validate the initially identified RZR Turbo recall repair, necessitating a more complex and expensive repair solution. As a result, the voluntary stop ride/stop sale notification issued on July 25, 2016 remained in place significantly longer than originally anticipated, delaying any sales of the highly-requested RZR Turbo vehicle. Also, given the additional RZR thermal issues, the Company revalidated many of its recently introduced model year 2017 ORV products, causing a delay in shipments of those vehicles. The Company believes its model year 2017 products and the more aggressive programs it has planned for the second half of 2016 will have a positive impact on Off-Road Vehicle (‘ORV’) sales. However, given the delayed model year 2017 shipments and additional recall activity, the expected positive impact will be deferred later than the Company had originally estimated.

The earnings revision of $2.50 to $2.70 per diluted share can be summarized as follows: approximately half is related to the margin impact from delayed model year 2017 shipments, including the high margin RZR Turbo vehicles, as the Company revalidated its new model line-up and protects dealer inventory levels, along with correspondingly lower sales of the Company’s high-margin Parts, Garments and Accessories (‘PG&A’) business; and about 25 percent is the result of higher promotional and customer appreciation costs to rebuild confidence and credibility with RZR owners. The remaining 25 percent is primarily related to expediting the product recall repairs, including the recently announced RZR Turbo recall which, when combined with the one-time warranty, legal and acquisition related costs recorded in the first half of 2016, totals approximately $120 million, or about $1.20 per diluted share of costs that should be considered non-recurring in 2017.

We have engaged outside engineering experts to help accelerate the remediation process, we are sending additional repair technicians into the field to assist our dealers, and we have created a new independent safety and quality function reporting directly to me. Additionally, we are pleased that the vast majority of our model year 2017 products have begun shipping, after undergoing a thorough internal and external review to identify and address any potential safety risks. While we are disappointed with our recent performance, our team is aggressively driving improvements that will make Polaris a better and stronger company.”
