11 things you need to know about the 2015 Acura TLX, acura tl manual transmission for sale
So far this year, 7 out of every 10 cars Acura has sold were SUVs. Yet in two days of talks with executives, product planners, and engineers, there was not
one single mention of the MDX or RDX. Meaning: the trucks might rake in the sales, but it's Acura's sedans that matter. And none more so than the TLX.
1. We're still waiting for the Legend.
We're sick of saying it, but Acura's naming scheme is a poor attempt at copycatting the Germans. It took Mercedes some 90 years to come up with a
marketing-run naming scheme-and by that time, it had cemented its reputation as one of the world's premier automobile builders. Acura is a made-up brand,
created by a marketing department—and it started out with the best name in the business: Legend. The company's new names (ILX. TLX, RLX ), like its last
ones (CL, TL, RL) are a nonsensical, jumbled alphabet-soup mess to buyers.

Enough, already, Acura: just put a Legend badge on this car so customers know
what it is.
2. The TLX is two cars in one
The TLX replaces both the TL and TSX. The TLX rides on a wheelbase identical to the larger TL, but is almost exactly halfway between the two older cars in
its external dimensions. Inside, however, it has slightly less EPA interior volume than either—and the backseat is TSX-sized, with decent legroom but
restricted toe-room under the front seats. It feels roomy back there since the front seatbacks are very low. The rear seat is 60/40-split, but the
pass-through is disappointingly small, and the trunk, which measures between 13.2 and 14.3 cu ft, isn't enormous.
3. New engines, new transmissions
The powertrains look carryover, but they're not. Both the 2.4-liter four-cylinder (201 hp) and the 3.5-liter V6 (290 hp) get direct injection, and both
transmissions are new. The V6 gets a ZF-sourced 9-speed automatic that we've seen elsewhere—and though it's better here than in other applications, it's
still not great. It uses an electronic shifter we first saw in the RLX, and it takes an eternity to engage drive, its shifts are clunky, and it's painfully
slow to react to manual commands. The four-cylinder gets Honda's own 8-speed dual-clutch automatic, which ingeniously uses a torque converter that allows
for perfectly smooth launches. The DCT's shifter is conventional, and once in gear, it shifts both immediately and imperceptibly. It's not particularly
quick at responding to manual commands (from the steering-wheel paddles) or at executing sudden downshift requests, but its smoothness is second to none.
There is, sadly, no manual transmission option—for a clutch pedal. you'll need the smaller ILX.
4. Ignore the X, unless it also says SH-AWD
Despite the "X" in its name, which typically connotes AWD, the TLX is a front-wheel drive machine with either the I4 or the V6. Both FWD models come with
P-AWS, Acura's electric rear steering that helps agility, handling, and stability under braking. There is an SH-AWD all-wheel-drive option on the V6,
which uses a smaller and more efficient differential to provide up to 885 lb-ft of actual torque vectoring across the rear axle. SH-AWD is, as always,
astonishingly good at putting power to the ground and assisting in corners, and remains one of the best AWD systems on the market.
5. Superb suspension
The TLX switches to a strut-type front suspension, and the only drawback we can see is a big turning radius (despite assistance from the rear wheels, the
turning circle grows over both the TSX and larger TL, both of which used double-wishbone front suspension.) In all other regards, the TLX's suspension is a
high-point: it rides extraordinarily well, with perfectly controlled body motions and isolated impacts, and it remains mercifully out of its bump-stops in
all but the worst bumps. Even then, the impacts are well-damped.
Both front-wheel drive models fall into moderate to severe understeer at their cornering
limits—which is sometimes mitigated by the rear-wheel steering, and sometimes not. It occasionally feels as though the rear steering is a step behind,
leading to a spooky transition from understeer toward more neutral behavior. The SH-AWD system, however, will send the TLX beautifully neutral, and the
stability control computer won't rain on the sideways parade unless things get severely out of hand.
6. Terrible tires
Two of the three models of TLX (The 2.5 base model and V6 SH-AWD, but not the V6 base which wore Bridgestone Potenzas. - Ed. ) we drove were equipped with Goodyear Eagle LS2 tires that we absolutely hated. (Rated 26 th out of 29 tires in its class
on Tire Rack's user surveys. it seems we aren't alone.) They generate far too little grip and go limp once they approaching their limits, and they squeal
far too easily. This isn't a track car—its brakes will be smoking after a single stop from 100 mph—but Acura is portraying the TLX as a sporty car and it
deserves better tires. On the other hand, perhaps the low-grip tires contribute to the excellent fuel economy—it posts gains of 4 mpg on the
highway compared to the four-cylinder 2.4, and the V6 beats the old TL by 5 mpg.
7. Hush hush
The cabin of the TLX is amazingly quiet. Wind noise doesn't become noticeable until over 100 mph, and road noise is hushed. The TLX uses active noise
cancellation as well as conventional tricks, including expanding-foam insulation in the body. The optional ELS sound system lacks punchy bass response, but
sounds fantastic with excellent imaging and beautifully crisp treble.
8. Distracting touchscreen
Replacing the previous TL's sea of buttons is a touchscreen that works together with the Acura controller and a second screen. The multiple interfaces
render the entire infotainment system confusing, made worse by illogical menus, inscrutable controls, and redundant displays. We suspect you'll get used to
it over time, but the system is overly distracting and just a pain to use.
9. The driver assistance systems need. assistance
The TLX has optional driver assistance systems that don't seem ready for production. Each of our three test cars experienced multiple false alarms on its
forward collision warning system, beeping and flashing "STOP" in front of the driver for no reason whatsoever. A rear cross-traffic alert system was
similarly acting like Chicken Little as we pulled out of parking spots, warning of cars that were a hundred feet away and not heading anywhere near us. The active
cruise control wasn't able to smoothly follow a car in front (it continually and alternately applies gas and brake, which is great if you'd like your
passengers to throw up) and accelerated far too slowly to keep up with traffic.
10. Multiple personalities, one clear winner
In lieu of having two separate sedans, the 2.4-liter TLX and 3.5-liter TLX are tuned very differently, aimed at very different customers. The four-cylinder
is vocal, engaging, and eager. Its transmission's shifts are lightning-fast, and the car is light on its feet. The TLX V6's responses, by
comparison, feel dulled—and it requires upwards of 4000 rpm for the engine to come alive. The transmission's shifts are slurred and slow, and the
suspension tuning is far softer and less responsive. The car feels far heavier and less agile, and no more refined. Everyone who drove the two models
preferred the four-cylinder by a substantial margin-and wished that Acura would make an SH-AWD model with that powertrain.
11. The bottom line
The 2.4-liter TLX, especially, hits the perfect compromise between luxury-car refinement and sufficient driver engagement. Despite the rear-wheel steering,
it's not a particularly sporty car, and it's no dynamic competitor to rear-drive BMWs, Lexuses, or Cadillacs. That said, it's a quieter, smoother cruiser
than a 3 Series, and it rides far better.
Though definitely an improvement over the TSX and TL, the TLX's styling is less love-it-or-hate-it and more … adequate. The multiple-segment
headlights are perhaps the most controversial element, now that the buck-toothed grille has been toned down, but the rest of the car comes across as rather
bland.
As usual, Acura excels at making a very good car, but doesn't deliver a slam-dunk on the desirability scale. The TLX will no doubt make a great travel
companion, and the decision to offer two dramatically different personalities with the two engines was a brilliant move. But the one thing this car needs
more than anything else is some gotta-have-it factor. And a name badge that won't confuse its customers.
Acura TL, acura tl manual transmission for sale
tional value and above-average durability and reliability.
The current (fourth) generation may have upped the ante, but cutting-edge technology and bracing performance are nothing new for the TL. Older TLs are still known for their engaging handling and plentiful amenities and should make a fine choice for a used luxury sport sedan.
Current Acura TL
As Acura's midsize sedan offering, the TL offers a roomy interior, a powerful V6 engine and available all-wheel drive. It also boasts a host of gadgets and gizmos that should keep most luxury shoppers satisfied.
There are two trim levels: a base model and the sportier SH-AWD. Base cars (which are front-wheel drive) are motivated by a 3.5-liter V6 that kicks out 280 horsepower. As its name suggests, the SH-AWD version is all-wheel drive, and it's powered by a 3.7-liter V6 good for 305 hp. A six-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters is standard on both trims and a six-speed manual is available on the SH-AWD.
Base models are pretty well equipped, offering standard features such as 17-inch wheels, xenon headlights, a sunroof, leather upholstery and an eight-speaker stereo with an in-dash six-CD changer. In addition to all-wheel drive and a more powerful engine, the SH-AWD adds upgraded brakes, 18-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, sportier steering feel and performance-themed upholstery and metallic trim.
TL enthusiasts cherish the car for its cutting-edge gadgetry, and the current model does not disappoint. Standard features on base models include Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, a USB port and a dedicated iPod interface. Optional tech treats include a navigation system that offers real-time traffic and weather updates and a sound system with digital music storage capability.
In reviews of the Acura TL, our editors hailed its abundance of high-tech amenities, its roomy cabin and its sophisticated stereo system. They called out a few missteps as well, such as the car's bland interior and the fact that base models are hampered by uncommunicative steering and unremarkable brakes. Thanks to its much crisper handling and braking, the SH-AWD TL is a more compelling choice than the base model. The current TL is also one of just a few vehicles to earn a top grade in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's revised crash test standards.
Used Acura TL Models
The current (fourth)-generation TL debuted for the 2009 model year. Compared to earlier TLs, the current model boasts a brasher look, highlighted by aggressive lines and a dramatic-looking front grille. The current model offers more interior room than the third-generation TL, as well as more power under the hood, and its ride is more compliant than that of its predecessor. There have been only a few changes since. Most notably, 2009-'11 TLs had a five-speed automatic transmission (compared to the newer six-speed auto) and a more controversial-looking grille.
The third-generation TL was available for model years 2004-'08. This TL was distinguished by its chiseled exterior styling, firm suspension tuning, powerful V6 and impressive level of standard equipment. Both a six-speed manual transmission and a five-speed automatic with shift paddles were available.
Two versions of the TL were offered in this era: base and Type-S. Base-model TLs built in model years 2004 and '05 were rated at 270 hp, while 2006 and later models were rated at 258. Note that this revision merely reflected a change in the standard horsepower rating system -- the TL's engine was unchanged.
Type-S Acuras were equipped with a 286-hp 3.5-liter V6. They also featured a sport-tuned suspension, Brembo high-performance brakes and unique styling elements that included quad tailpipes. Unfortunately for enthusiasts, the Type-S was on hiatus for the first part of the TL's model cycle and didn't hit the market until 2007.
Both versions of the TL came with an attractive, well-built interior designed with a more sporting intent in mind. In road tests, we were impressed with this Acura TL's comfort and dynamic abilities but ultimately found that its front-wheel-drive setup hampered its ability to match the handling dynamics offered by top rear-drive sport sedans. The Type-S upped the performance ante somewhat, boosting power while adding crisper handling.
For a majority of shoppers, a used TL from this era will provide a good mix of fun, comfort and convenience at a reasonable price. Changes during the model cycle were few, but the TL received a midlife freshening for 2007, including minor exterior and interior styling tweaks and an upgraded navigation system.
The second-generation Acura TL was built from 1999-2003. Though it was less exciting than more recent models, our editors gave this TL very positive reviews during its run. Improvements were made throughout this period, and the car had a number of TL firsts, including Honda's VTEC variable valve timing and an optional navigation system. The powerful Type-S version, which debuted in 2002, should be strongly considered by buyers interested in increased performance. Regardless of specific trim level, just about any used second-generation model should serve the used-sedan shopper well.
The original Acura TL debuted in 1995 as a replacement for the unloved Acura Vigor. Two versions were offered: a 2.5 TL with a 2.5-liter inline-5 engine and a 3.2 TL with a 3.2-liter V6. Both models were available throughout the first generation's run, which lasted pretty much unchanged through 1998. As there is now little price difference between the two, we suggest consumers interested in a first-generation used TL go for the more powerful 3.2.
Should I Buy a Used Acura TL?, acura tl manual transmission for sale
Vehicle Overview
The 2004 model year saw the introduction of an unofficial third-generation Acura TL. Although this was the first time just the TL moniker was used on an Acura model, two previous generations of mid-size luxury sedans used the letters TL after a set of numbers designating the engine.
The TL was available initially with a 3.2-liter V6 engine that was rated at 270 HP for 2004-2005 and then reduced to 258 HP in 2006 thanks to new SAE certification ratings. The V6 could be paired to a five-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual, both sending power to the front wheels.
In 2007 a more powerful Type-S arrived on the scene powered by a 286 HP 3.5-liter V6, also paired to either a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual.
Trims Packages
From 2004-2006 the TL came in a singular trim that could have various items added to it. In 2007 a Type-S edition was added.
Top 3 Reasons to Buy
- Reliability – Although the TL does have a few issues, for the most part owners have been very satisfied with reliability.
- Style – Many owners love the look of the 2004-2008 TL and consider it to be the best looking generation of TL, especially the TL Type-S.
- Sophistication – For many owners, the TL was their first luxury car purchase as they were looking for a more sophisticated car.
Top 3 Problem Areas
- Transmission – Both the five-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmission have had issues. The automatic with irregular shifts and not engaging gears, while the six-speed manual has been plagued with third gear issues.
- Dashboard Cracks – Owners have found dashboard cracks form on their TLs, specifically around the passenger airbag.
- Rattles and Squeaks – many used cars develop rattles and squeaks, but the TL appears to be especially susceptible to them in the rear.
Before You Buy
Ensure all recalls have been performed on the TL as each year has a few listed on the NHTSA website. Check for dashboard cracks around the passenger airbag and listen for any squeaks or rattles during a test drive.
Feel for any unusual behavior from the transmission as well, regardless of transmission type.
Best Bang for Your Buck
The 2004 and 2005 TL have had far more complaints lodged with the NHTSA than other model years. Despite these cars having higher horsepower ratings, the lower ratings of the 2006+ cars were just from a new rating procedure and not an actual decrease in power compared to the previous model years. Our advice would be to look for a regular 2006-2008 TL, unless more you want more performance. If that's the case, look for a Type-S instead.

3rd Generation TL Manual Transmission, acura tl manual transmission for sale
MY first post: Actually own a 98 tl3.2 top of line made in J beauty which would be perfect if it had a 5 or more speed manual so I could drive it economically if I wanted to. Dealers and Fanciers think my car underpowered. I think it's way way overpowered for my way of driving. I got acuraa ( my 4th) for quiet, comfort, great handling and great resale value Now if Could get a 4 cyl turbo'ed engine in there and get 40 mpg when I want to or have the big push when I need it.
so I am looking for a third gen tl group who know it there really is a std transmission availabe somewhere.
Also Have a successful up and coming kid in san diego who deserves to get into an Acura-, hatchback or suv mini as he's in the restaurant and wine business
So you're looking for a 3G TL with a manual? Good luck, they're difficult to find used, trust me. I looked for months before I found mine. I suggest going to cars.com and using the advanced search function to look for only MT TLs in your area. That's how I found mine.
^^what he said. also check the BM section of the site for members cars for sale.
are you willing to travel for this car.
6MT are rare birds. yes i have one. but you can't have it.
oh i think there a 6MT in my area at a local dealer no navi, but is an 06 with 82k mi and one owner (iirc). they want just under $15k

When I had purchased my '05 new, I made sure it was the 6MT version with ebony interior. Now that I have the '07 S, I made sure it was the same combo as my last one, but with navi as an added bonus. You take a gamble when you're buying used and if it's not close by for you to do inspections, you'd have to trust what's presented to you in pictures. Luckily for me, that gamble paid off and I flew to NYC to go get mine and got to experience my first Nor'easter on the way back!
When I bought mine, I had the sales manager do a walk around the car with a technician. They noted every little problem, and advised me of the details. They really stepped up to the plate after I received the car as well, as one of the wheels were bent. They footed the $140 repair bill. Luckily they were a reputable dealer.

A personal example of the above consideration is that I drive an '06 TL AT, and frankly allowed myself to be steered away from the MT by the Acura salesman. but I'm glad I was. Now the salesman knew that perhaps 1 in 20 TLs goes off the lot in a MT configuration. most all have the AT. so the latter was what he had to offer. However, the blessing in disguise is that driving here in Southern California is a real bear, the freeways are so conjested. Since I drive the car for work (outside sales), who wants to be grinding through the gears of a manual transmission while crawling for hours at 5-10 mph? Anyway, I offer this account as something you might consider.
Also, both the AT & MT versions should cost the same. You'll lose some performance with the AT, a little bit. The MT makes around 240ish wheel horsepower, whereas the AT version is in the low 220 range. The MT also accelerates more quickly because of that extra gear that enables the engine to remain closer to it's powerband. Honda motors crank their peak power very close to redline.
6,500 rpm for the TL. (AT stock = 0-60 mph in best of 6.4 sec, MT = 5.9 sec)
Either version delivers nearly the same fuel economy. that will vary more on how you drive than on the transmission option. Automatic transmissions use 'lockup' torque converters that suffer very little parasitic losses, unlike cars from several decades ago. so they approach MT fuel economies once at cruising speed.
One other thing I might suggest. consider the '05 over the '04 model. The 2004 was the first year for the 3rd generation TL, and like all first year products, that's where you'll find the most 'bugs'. Some consumers have complained about certain rattles in the earlier versions. there could be other minor issues; not saying Acura's are not reliable, they are, only that the '05 will likely be more defect-free than the '04.
Hope this helps.

Im in the market for a 2004-2005 acura TL. Was just wondering some of the pros and cons of getting the 6 speed stickshift vs. the 5 speed automatic. which is better bang for the buck. thanks in advance.

What kind of driving do you do and what do you prefer. Alot of stop and go traffic can make manual transmission annoying for some. According to the mpg listings on the new cars now automatic gets better gas mileage.

It also has a higher top speed and handles better because of the lighter weight.
It is more reliable, cheaper to maintain and replace.
And it gets 1-2mpg better gas mileage again because of the light weight and extra gear.
But the Automatic has a higher resale value because automatic cars are more expneisve in general than manual cars.

I have 2 Acuras. In the last 3 weeks my TL 2004 transmission had to be replaced @ 118000 miles. Yesterday my wife's TL 2003 transmission failed also. Her mileage is 94000 miles. I have owned Acuras and have never had a problem. I don't know what to do other than repairing her car. Any thoughts our there?

2 For 2. This Is Mother Nature's Way Of Telling You That If You Buy An Acura Then Plan On Transmission Repairs At Around 100,000 Miles.
These transmissions are not very reliable. Is an Acura made by Honda.
You don't know what to do other than repairing her car. It's too late this time, but an option for next time is to buy a different car make.
Did both transmissions suffer the same type of failure. What went bad ?

Acura is Honda's luxury division, so Acura is indeed made by Honda. Your cars were made during a bad era for Honda transmissions. Pretty much anything made by Honda during that time had early transmission failure problems, particularly the Odyssey minivans. It wasn't uncommon for one of those vans to be on it's fourth of fifth transmission at this mileage (and people talk bad about Chrysler). Maintenance will go a long way in preserving your new transmissions. A simple drain and fill every 20,000 to 30,000 miles, using only genuine Honda fluid, will maximize your tranny life expectancy. If you haven't maintained your transmissions prior to this, you probably better start.

When the automatic transmission in most FWD cars fails, which is often, it usually sends them to the salvage yard as repair costs generally exceed the cars value and the owners seldom have the $3500 needed to replace the transmission..This is one of the reasons that pick-up trucks have become so popular..They cost less and last twice as long.

Are You The Cars' Original Owner. Some 03 & 04 TLs Have Been Recalled For Possible Over-Heating Automatic Transmission 2nd Gears Which Can Chip Or Break And Even Lock-Up The Transmission.
The recall included some 2003 TLs (3.2TL) and some 2004 TLs (in a certain VIN range).
If this has possibilities or leaves you wondering, get the VINs from both cars and call your dealer to have them checked for open recalls.
You stll didn't say what has failed in these particular transmissions. Please tell if you know.
Goldwing 2010-05-13 18:19:58 UTC #6
How often did you change the tranny fluid? There's an exterior, screw-on ATF filter that sits right on top of the tranny, was this ever replaced? Did you ever tow anything with these cars?
This tranny is virtually the same as the one in my 2002 Odyssey. A lot of people have had major problems with these, especially the 2-3 and 3-4 shift. One theory is that the pressure sensors go bad over time and lead to poor shifts which destroys the clutches.
Another theory is that solenoid filter screens get plugged up. Yet another theory is that the tranny fluid gets too hot. Honda won't really say what the main cause is and they never want to work on transmissions other than to completely replace them. Many Honda dealers don't even know about the ATF filter. I'll bet they never recommended changing yours.
You can read many stories similar to yours at acurazine.com or other Honda owners forums.

Yes, It's the same problem. I have owned Acuras since 1988. I have never had a problem like this before.
andrew_j 2010-05-13 22:56:00 UTC #8
Then again you could simply buy a manual transmission FWD and they lead long lives. It is beyond rare to have a failure prone manual transmission.
